Cemetery Today

Local interest in rehabilitating the Midas Cemetery began to grow in the 1990s, and in late 1994, Friends of Midas was organized to oversee the project.

Working closely with Elko County, Friends of Midas determined that the Cemetery was on private land and began the process to clear brush from the site.

In 1995, Barrick Gold transferred its ownership of a 13-acre parcel, which included the Cemetery, to Elko County. The County authorized Friends of Midas to maintain the site. During the subsequent years, the white picket fence and entry gate were re-created and commemorative markers were installed. The ashes of some former Midas residents found their final resting places here.

Each year, volunteers mow the perennial crop of weeds and maintain the fence. On the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, Friends of Midas hosts a one-hour walking tour of the Midas Cemetery. For more information about activities at the Cemetery each year, please email FriendsofMidas@gmail.com.

Additional details about the Midas Cemetery may be found in A Century of Enthusiasm  and also on Find-A-Grave. Currently, the Midas Cemetery’s page has 34 memorials, which can be browsed at this page. Many thanks to Larry Estes, a Midas neighbor, who has greatly enhanced that page with his photos and research! His good work has ensured that the final resting places for many Midas residents will not be forgotten.

Visitors are welcome at the Midas Cemetery, a quiet and peaceful place with an exceptional view out into the nearby valleys. Please inquire locally for directions, and be sure to close all gates behind you.
